Marie Hughes Alexander
Class of '40

Marie Hughes Alexander, a native of Middle River, MD, died Dec. 24, 2007 in Modesto, CA. Valedictorian of the Class of 1940, she received the Mother Seton Award for academic excellence at their graduation. In the words of her classmates "Marie has the patience, the brains, the adaptability, the poise, the enthusiasm to be among the very best."

Marie and her husband Cyrus Alexander settled in Modesto in 1946. She then embarked on a rewarding 25-year career with the State of California Department of Rehabilitation. Upon her retirement in 1980, Marie was active in her parish, enjoyed gardening and spending time with the grandchildren. She fulfilled a lifelong dream of traveling to Ireland and experienced the beautiful colors of autumn in New England.

Marie was predeceased by her husband in 1973, and their daughter, Donna Yonan, in 1996. She is survived by daughters Judith DeLeon, Sharon King, Linda Alexander, Kathleen Irizarry; sons Michael and Dennis Alexander; and 12 grandchildren.
