Mary Jane Gorman
Class of '55
Mary Jane Gorman, of Lynchburg, VA, originally a member of the SJC Class of 1955, died Sept. 15, 2009, at the Medical Care Center there.
Born in Lynchburg on April 14, 1933, she was the eldest daughter of Joseph Vincent Gorman and Mary Jane Desmond Gorman.
Jane spent her life doing religious work. After graduating form Holy Cross High School in Lynchburg, she enrolled at SJC. During her sophomore year, she joined the Daughters of Charity and was a member of the community for 20 years. She earned a BA degree from SJC in 1960.
In 1966, she earned a Masters of Library Science from St. John's University, NY, and in 1975, a Masters of Religious Education from Boston College. She earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from St. Mary's Seminary and University, Baltimore, and taught at the University of San Diego.
Upon moving back to Lynchburg in her later years, she was the director of religious education at Holy Cross Catholic Church, until she became ill. She was a lifetime member of Holy Cross Parish.
Jane is survived by two sisters, Henrietta (Cookie) Weidman of Purvis, MS, and Marguerite Miletic and her husband Peter of Hilton Head, S.C.; four brothers, Joseph Vincent Gorman Jr. and his wife Jeannie of Blacksburg, VA, Jeremiah D. Gorman and his wife, Joyce, of Richmond, Paul Gorman of Lynchburg and William R. Gorman and his wife Janet of Newport News, VA. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law, Ann Gorman, who helped care for her. She was predeceased by her parents and a sister, Cecelia Kennedy.
