In Memoriam
Eleanor Duffy Jeans
Class of '65
Eleanor “Cookie” Duffy Jeans, a member of the Class of 1965, died of cancer on Sept. 3, 2008 in Doylestown, PA. She was 64, and one of three Duffy sisters to attend SJC. Born in Philadelphia to Charles and Frances Lehman Duffy, Cookie was raised in the Roxborough section of the city, and then lived most of her life in Buckingham Township, near Doylestown.
She attended St. John's Parish Elementary and Hallahan High schools, and earned a degree in chemistry from SJC, followed by graduate studies at Villanova University. She joined McNeil Pharmaceuticals in 1967, and worked nearly 30 years for various Johnson & Johnson companies until her retirement in 2003. She was a significant contributor to several well-known drugs, including Tylenol, Monistat, and Levaquin.
Cookie and Christopher Jeans were married for 36 years and the parents of Jennifer Jeans of Collegeville, PA. The couple enjoyed traveling to Europe, but Cookie’s favorite vacations were to Bermuda or a long weekend in Philadelphia. She played bridge and tennis, and enjoyed hosting tennis parties at home. Crossword and jigsaw puzzles, Villanova basketball, the Phillies baseball team, and especially the family cats filled her days during retirement.
In addition to her husband and daughter, two sisters, Frances Downs, and Charlotte Kain, a member of the Class of 1960; a niece and two nephews, survive Cookie. Her parents and a sister, Barbara Ann Duffy, a member of the Class of 1949, and former SJC Alumnae Association president, predeceased her.
The family suggested memorial contributions to Fox Chase Cancer Center, 333 Cottman Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19111-2497, or Chandler Hall Hospice, Attn: Development, 99 Barclay St, Newtown PA 18940.
