We Remember....

Ann Stapleton Phelan
Class of '54

Ann "Nan" Stapleton Phelan, age 77, of New Milford, CT., passed away peacefully on June 20, 2009 in Candlewood Valley Health Center.

The daughter of the late Walter and Katherine Murphy Stapleton, Nan grew up in Fairfield. A graduate of Georgetown Visitation Preparatory School, in Washington, DC, she continued her education at St. Joseph College, where she received her BA Degree in 1954.

Nan married the love of her live, John Phelan, and together, they raised four children in Bridgeport. After spending years vacationing on Candlewood Lake, Nan and John settled in New Milford. A devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother (D.J.), caring friend and neighbor are just a few of the many ways to portray Nan. Her desire to help those in need remained a focus throughout her life as seen with volunteering in organizations including as past president and longtime board member of St. Vincent's Medical Center Auxiliary, the Hospice Volunteer program at St. Vincent's, as well as serving on the Board of Directors for St. Joseph's Manor, Center for Women and Families, the Black Rock Community Council, Brooklawn Country Club, the Candlewood Lake Club, and Woman's Club of New Milford and New Fairfield.

In addition to her husband of 54 years, she will be remembered by her children, Katherine (Kate) Phelan-Collins (John); Robert Ehlers; Elizabeth (Betsy) Blagys (William); and John Phelan (Michelle) her grandchilden, Sean, Elizabeth, and Patrick Collins, Caleb and William Blagys, Avery, Adele, and Ann Phelan; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her daughter, Anne Marie Phelan-Ehlers, and her sister, Joan Stapleton Giblin. The family suggested contributions in Nan's memory to: Memorial Sloan- Kettering Hospital, Pancreatic Cancer Research, 1275 York Ave., New York, NY 10021.
