Sister Lauretta Posey, D.C.
Class of '42
Sr. Lauretta Posey, D.C., died Oct. 30, 2008, at Villa St. Michael, Emmitsburg, where she resided for six years. She was 87 years of age and 67 years of vocation.
She was born Mary Regina Posey in Greensburg, PA, to Fabian and Lauretta Rohrback Posey. Her father was a lawyer in Frederick, MD for many years. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School, Emmitsburg, in 1938, and entered the Daughters of Charity in 1940.
Originally a member of the SJC Class of 1942, she earned a B.A. degree in English in 1948 from the College, and a master’s degree in library science from The Catholic University of America in 1956. Sr. Lauretta also held an advanced professional certification in library science in the State of Maryland.
After completing the seminary [novitiate] in 1941, Sr. Lauretta taught at St. Dominic and St. Martin schools in Baltimore. Her teaching career also included Sacred Heart School, Norfolk, VA, and St. Catherine Laboure School, Harrisburg, PA. After furthering her education at Catholic University, Sr. Lauretta spent more years as teacher and librarian at Immaculate Conception Academy; Cardinal McCloskey High School, Albany, NY; Elizabeth Seton High School, Bladensburg, MD, where she was also local superior; and Bishop England High School, Charleston, SC.
After a short stay working in the Archives at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Sister’s duties changed to pastoral care during her next three assignments. At St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Jacksonville, FL, she was local superior and a member of the pastoral care department. She was then pastoral minister at Good Shepherd Church/Hope Mills, NC; followed by service in the pastoral care department at St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore. Sr. Lauretta served as librarian at St. Joseph’s Provincial House until she retired to Villa St. Michael.
Sr. Lauretta was an exemplary Daughter of Charity, noted for her generosity, ready smile, and had a gift for bringing about peace
Predeceased by her parents, her sibling sister, Sr. Justine Posey, D.C., and her brother, Charles Posey, she is survived by numerous cousins.
