We Remember....

Catherine Regan Shartle Sariano
Class of ’43

Catherine Johanna Regan Shartle Sariano, 87, a member of the SJC Class of 1943, died peacefully on June 1, 2009, at Holy Spirit Hospital in Camp Hill, PA. Born in Harrisburg on Nov. 24, 1921, she was the youngest of five children of Thomas J. Regan and Mary Dailey Regan. She graduated from Harrisburg Catholic High School in 1939 and attended both SJC and Penn State University. One of her daughters, Margaret Shartle Kenney, graduated from SJC in 1971.

Catherine married Frank K. Shartle in 1941, immediately before he left to serve for four years in India and China during World War II. They had eight children: Mary Catherine Galotto (John); Frances A. Weisinger (Gary); Margaret V. Shartle Kenney (John); Theresa M. Schiffhauer (Louis); Michael R. Shartle (Rosemary); Frank K. Shartle, Jr. (JoAnne); William P. Shartle (Darren); and John T. Shartle (Margaret). Frank K. Shartle, Sr. died in 1971.

In 1975, Catherine married John P. Sariano, Sr. She was a member of St. Margaret Mary Church in Harrisburg and was active both in her church and community.  She will be lovingly remembered as wife, mother, and grandmother to her devoted family, around whom her life revolved.

Catherine is survived by her husband, John P. Sariano, Sr., eight children, and their spouses, from her first marriage, as well as four stepchildren, John P. Sariano, Jr., (Barbara); Joanne M. Wanat (John); Margaret Kitsch; and Lois Preble (George); 27 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren.

The family suggested memorial contributions to Holy Spirit Hospital RN Scholarship Fund, 503 N. 21st Street, Camp Hill, PA 17011.
