Former SJC Alumnae Sister

Sr. Mary Patricia Winters, DC, a former St. Joseph College faculty member, who in later years served as the Alumnae Sister on our Board of Trustees, died May 6, 2008 at Villa St. Michael in Emmitsburg. She was 73 years of age and 52 years of vocation.

Mary Patricia Winters was born in Baltimore, one of three children of John E. and Mildred E. Glenn Winters. She graduated from Seton High School in 1952 and entered the Daughters of Charity in 1956. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from SJC in 1959. After completing the seminary (novitiate) in 1958, Sr. Mary Patricia was sent to Saint Mary’s Hospital, Troy, NY, where, after six month’s experience as staff nurse, she became supervisor of a medical-surgical nursing unit. In 1961, she was missioned to Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD and served as director of nursing.

Sister’s next assignment was to U.S. Soldiers’ Home and Hospital in Washington, D.C. in 1964. After receiving her master’s degree in nursing in 1970 from The Catholic University of America, Sister was missioned to the faculty of St. Joseph College. When the college closed in 1973, Sister moved to DePaul Hospital, Norfolk, VA, where she was director of nursing service.

After six years, she joined St. Agnes Hospital, Baltimore, as director of education. From 1981-1988 she was vice president of nursing at St. Vincent’s Medical Center, Jacksonville, FL. Sister was also director of pastoral care at Sacred Heart Hospital, Pensacola, FL. She then served Sacred Heart Hospital, Cumberland, MD as vice-president of mission services, and later as director of pastoral care.

Diagnosed with cancer in 2000, Sr. Mary Patricia fought through chemotherapy and bone marrow transplants, and during recuperation continued to work as a docent at the Seton Shrine. From 2002 until her death, she served as assistant to the local superior of Villa St. Michael, Emmitsburg.

Sister-in-law Jane Winters; cousin June Bouvier; niece Karen Myers; nephews James, John R. and John B. Winters; and numerous great nieces and nephews survive Sr. Mary Patricia.
